Wordpress Plug-in Must-Haves

(Sorry Blogger..)

Aside from Angelfire and Geocities, I started creating websites with Wordpress. Sure, fancy scripts and FTP is fun, but my agenda was different this time around.

Optimization is key,

Top picks for streaming internet radio

The choices are endless. The playlist options are unfathomable. Millions of songs... for free. To listen to that is - no downloading here. As many of my fellow "Napster-generation" and Lime Wire lovers make the switch from download to digital on-demand, one question remains... what service should I use?

Top picks for streaming radio (online)

1. Slacker Radio
- great alternative to Pandora
- create your own station
- pick an artist, song, album, or genre... and base a radio station off your favorite selections
- syncs seemlessly with Facebook
- FREE version has ads, once every five or so songs

2. Pandora

- I first signed up for Pandora three years ago. The concept of internet radio was just emerging, but now years later Pandora has proven it can withstand the test of time.
- Limited number of skip tracks (three per hour?) makes choosing a station somewhat difficult
- Share track & station info easily on Facebook & Twitter
- Lists artist/track/album info along with portion of lyrics (paid version can view full lyrics!)
- FREE version has ads, every few songs
- Can slow down memory, making computer sluggish

3. Rdio
- Very impressive off the bat - the fail to make clear you have a limited amount of free music. If I had known I wouldn't of left on when I went to sleep.
- Listen to individual songs - create playlists - like your favorites and share with this social media friendly app.
- Clean layout on a very cool website.. worth trying.

4. MOD
- Similar to Rdio but seems to allow users unlimited unlimited free music to listen to.

5. Spotify
- Most options for radio preferences/playlists but you must download the program onto your computer - can overload older computers without sufficient memory capabilities
- Ads are played every couple songs, quite repetitive
- Cool apps such as Tune Wiki
- Lots of songs, options, and features. Try pro version for 30 days free.

Free radio. Free music.
But what does it really cost?

In the news...

The Internet Radio Royalty System Is Broken

Pandora’s income potential could soon be set loose. New U.S. legislation proposes to change how music royalty payments are made for online radio companies. Such costs lock up about half of Pandora’s revenue. Read more as we explains just how much value could be released by reducing them.
The Internet Radio Fairness Act, a rare bipartisan proposal in Congress, seeks to revise digital laws enacted almost 15 years ago when the medium was less developed and understood. Judges instead would be directed to impose royalty rates for online services using the same standard historically applied to other forms of radio. U.S. satellite radio monopoly Sirius XM, for example, pays a proportion of revenue that’s more than 80 percent lower than Pandora’s.

Applying internet know-how to new smartphone technology

We are undoubtedly in an digital revolution where the internet reigns supreme.

We are connected in some form or fashion for most of the day and into the wee hours of the night. So it was no surprise the mobile phone version of the internet aka the smartphone became our new best friend.

The smartphone platforms are very similar to that of our computer's operating system, I'm sure many will agree with me there. Did you take to your new internet phone like your newborn child? Don't deny it.

But with this new growing fad comes problems as well. Broken phones, lost passwords (aka stolen phones), microSD memory card malfunctions, the list goes on and on and on.

New, uncharted territory

Yes, the world of the smartphone is as vast and unknown as the internet once was ten years ago. Try searching for something related to your high tech gadget. The process can become downright exhausting. But one day it won't be so bad. Until technology advances yet again... and who knows what's next in store for us in technological terms.

Consider this an introduction of sorts - as I would like to share some of my smartphone tips and tricks with people who need help - and simply can't find it.

Stay tuned for new stuff in this category - soon to come.

CopyTo - all in one Burning Software

CopyTo - all in one Burning Software

I like to share my recommendations as far as pretty much anything computer/internet related because I have spent a lot of time testing out different programs. Many of the programs I use are completely free of charge.

This one here is only a free trial, BUT if you only need for say making a copy of an large file and will probably not need to burn anything else like that for awhile - this program is perfect.

I needed to use this one when I recently installed Windows 7 on my desktop computer. I needed to burn an .ISO image and the standard CD burner on my computer (Windows Media Player) does not have this option.

I have used this program for this purpose twice in the past year - it was a recommendation from a friend and after you play around with it you will get the hang of it. I would not recommend those inexperienced with computers to use this one - get some help for a friend if you need to burn a file that your standard burner can't handle.

And of course if you are in the market to buy some software, Amazon is a great place to start! They always offer the lowest prices on the internet and low shipping rates.

Don't forget to stock on blank discs... with prices like these at Amazon they won't last long!

100 count CD-R discs - less than 8 cents per disc!

100 count DVD-R pack - GREAT PRICE!

You Save: $24.01 (52%)

Free Standard Shipping
(3-5 days) on this item from Amazon.com. Simply select Standard Shipping during checkout (no code required).

And as always, happy surfing.

Can you make my computer faster?

Right now I am fixing the computer I'm browsing on because it's general lag just was too much for me to a handle.

This computer is a year old and running Windows 7 and runs as if it were my 2003 XP Dell Desktop.

No one is perfect, but I wonder why people download certain programs sometimes.

What more do you need in a search engine that Google, Bing, or Yahoo can't provide??

I don't know who thought an "israel based search engine homepage" was a good program to download, but it accounted for much of the lack of speed.

My point being, take care when you download stuff off the internet! I make it a point to now download programs except from certain websites I trust (and have used for years).

Download.com and FileHippo are examples of my main source of downloaded content. Occasionally I use Github or a similiar Creative Commons/Open Source website to test out new programs.

Most I end up uninstalling.

If you don't use a program, delete the damn thing!

I try and run my uninstaller once a week (I used Advance Uninstaller PRO) to see what's been downloaded and if I can free up space and delete junk programs.

And I just tracked down the culprit linking keywords on certain webpages. PlayBryte. Malware Game App in disguise.

I can't really talk, I'm overdue for a reformat. Today perhaps.

CutMyPic: A Simple, Free, Online Picture Tool

CutMyPic: A Simple, Free, Online Picture Tool: Edit your pictures online. Fast, Fun, & Free!

This is great if you want to crop an image quickly and don't want to do so with a regular photo editing program (such as Photoshop or Paint.NET). You can do so online, on the website itself, and then save or share your new edited image very easily.

There's a plethora of similar sites like CutMyPic, but I really liked this one. The options go beyond simply cropping and resizing an image. These options are basic, but just enough to get the job done.

Features include: Crop, resize, corner effects, shadow effects, sharpen, and other special effects you can check out in the screen shot below. I used CutMyPic to crop the screen shot by the way ;)

Once you are satisfied with your new image, make sure to email it, save it, or share it because the image is only available on their server for two weeks.

The design of the website is just so simple, yet appealing... I'm bookmarking this one.

AND... if you want to edit an image not already saved on your computer, there is an easy way to do so. Right click on the image and select "Copy image URL" then when you are prompted to select a file on the site, paste what you copied into the space next to "File Name" and voila, magic.

Grooveshark - Jaws is the least of their problems

Grooveshark: Social Music Media

New lawsuit adds to Grooveshark's troubles | Internet & Media - CNET News:

Article from CNET.com to sum up the legal troubles this streaming music social network has encountered recently. It's too bad because it is one of the few worth trying. It is very similar to Spotify, except that you are not required to download a program, which is a requirement for some people.

They offer searches to find & play any song you want, but you can only listen to these songs digitally - you are not downloading mp3s. You can also make playlists and select your favorite tracks so that the song engine plays tracks similar to your favorite ones.

Uncertain what the future holds for this company, but I hope they are able to get past all their legal issues.

Check them out online at Grooveshark.com.

Wal-Mart can be a pain in the ass but DAMN!

The following is a comment made to a news article. I do not know this man.

"I NEED TO CALM DOWN......TRUE STORY TODAY....A DAY IN MY LIFE. MAYBE I AM INSANE.
True story, 1 hr ago. I JUST EXPOLDED AT CASHIER AND WALMART MGR.
So I go to Walmart for groceries, and buy half and half. IM AM A LABEL READER, yes fine print. too. I treat foods like perscription drugs, got to read and memorize to PDR report on porducts, compulsiive habit.
So THIS AMERICAN PRODUCT IN AN AMERICAN STORE, IN AMERICA, MADE BY AMERICAN COWS THAT I HOPE ATE AMERICAN GRASS GROWN ON AMERICAN SOIL ( HALF AND HALF CREAMER) HAS SPANISH WRITING ON IT THAT I CANT READ.
So I ask a lady with a screaming kid, "excuse me maam, I'm an American, and cant read this, can you help me? She says, no, I'm an American too. SO I go to check out and ask the cashier, what does this term mean? She says I don't know, I'm American. So I call the mgr over (yes I'm like that) sir, what does this mean? He says he doesn't know? SO WHILE HOLDING A HALF GALLON OF HALF AND HALF, I HAVE A FIT, RANTING ABOUT HOW DO I KNOW THIS IS NOT A RAT POISON WARNING ON THE LABEL.
MGR says I think it says white cream in "Mexican". By this time I see security walking my way, "AND OF COURSE, I OBNOXIOUSLY SAY PLEASE DOn't INSUT ME BY CALLING THESE PANZIES SOME KIND OF SECURITY FORCE, I DESREVE BETTER..
SO SAY TO HIM I THINK IT SAYS RAT POINSON ON IT in Spanish.. ARE YOU SURE IT SAYS CREAM. iF I DRINK THIS AND DIE, CAN MY FAMILIY LOOK FOR YOU. He says no sir I'm not sure what it says,, please don't quote me sir. THE OTHER FOLKS IN A BUSY WALMART CLAPPED FOR ME. I BOWED, bought the milk, said thank you and went home."

You Have Been a Bad Little Search Engine Google ;)

FTC Means Business...
Google's Legal Battles Continue.

google

Google got hit with a $22.5 million fine for Safari tracking courtesy of the FCC. It's the largest penalty ever for a violation of an FTC order.

Is this some kind of scare tactic, making an example out of Google so that others know the FTC means business? It seems a little harsh, but the invasion of someones privacy is serious business. I think Google had good intentions though.

"No matter how big or small, all companies must abide by FTC orders against them and keep their privacy promises to consumers, or they will end up paying many times what it would have cost to comply in the first place."
Read the entire (updated) article here at CNET.com
This won't be the last time we hear about Google and personal privacy, this is only the beginning. What the future holds for the search engine turned powerhouse, only time will tell.

Printable Coupons Portal

The internet can be use as a great resource. Yes.. it is used other than a place to get free porn. If you have a busy lifestyle it can prove difficult to keep up. but it really  is a wonderful invention.

Trending.
You have heard the term if you've surfed the web anytime recently. Internet Fads. You can't help but be sucked into their trendy little webs.

"Trending" is a mutilation of the English language that means "currently popular." It derives from a sad misunderstanding of the verb "to trend" as meaning "to become a trend." (Defined at Urban Dictionary)

The trend topic today however is good for your wallet. And yet so simple.

The trend? PRINTABLE COUPONS.

Every major retailer offers them. Perhaps an incentive to gain an edge over the competitors, printable coupons are now used everyday at every store imaginable. Not everyone will take the time to print them out or get a sales flyer to get them, so it's those people putting the extra effort in who are getting the savings.

One site that has done very well with their free pintable coupons is Childrens Place, a childrens clothing store (online and off). They give discounts on merchandise or point of sale to satisfy their customers who love their one of a kind clothing and accessories for kids.

Finding printable coupons is easy. Just type "children's place printable coupon" into Google's search engine... or whatever store you would like to save money at. You will be amazed at all the money saving offers you were missing out on!

Here's an example of a printable coupon website. They offer the latest coupons and general news on the company.

Read the fine print on the coupon!

Many printable coupons are only good for a certain time period or have other exclusions you need to be aware of.

Give me your E-Mail

Many stores will send out special savings only to those people who are signed up on their email lists so make sure to sign up if you are planning on saving those extra dollars. They usually don't send out many emails, so it usually is not an issue for most people.

Childrens Place Coupons Childrens Place Printable Coupons August 2012

See? 15% off JUST for signing up.

Shipping Incentives

Why not buy online? You will get free shipping and skip the crowds so might as well, right?

People even auction off printable coupons... They are gold in our eyes, but these days we need all the extra money we can possibly save.

Besides Children's Place... what's also hot for Fall 2012? Coupons for Under Armour. Yes, they even make youth sizes :)

Don't forget, that not everyone can even afford new clothes for their children. Please consider donating your childrens clothesto a family in need, even slightly worn they will make all the difference to a child.

How do I create a website?

website ideas

So you want to know how to build you very own website. How is it done?

That's not really the easiest question to answer. But I can sure point in the right direction.

First of all you need to decide what you want your website to be about.

Website Ideas or Topics..

  • Photography is great for a "photoblog" which displays your photos or artwork in a creative way

  • A Blog is great for written content which gives information on a particular topic/subject/idea

- - Check out The Power of Blogging

  • Personal websites are not very common anymore, a simple "about me" section is more appropriate by today's standards. There are a million different social networking sites that can serve you better if your heart is set on this.

  • Business Pages are great advertising tools and will help generate new customers

If you have never made a website before start with a "Free Site". Domain names are great. But why pay money for something you may not even end up liking or use?

Try these websites to get your very own free website started... they require little to no knowledge to start!

Naming Your New Website

Once you have made your selection pick a user name/blog url that is similar to the topic or subject of your site. This will make it easier for search engines to correctly define and list your website which will in turn increase the number of people who will visit your website.

For example on Blogger your user name and blog name are seperate. My user name is Hottjam, but I named this blog Internet Junkie because my subject is the internet.

Customize Your Website Layout

Go ahead and play around once you are registered. Check out different layouts, customize your website, whatever. When you're ready put up your content.... you photos, stories, tips, etc. You want to have a good amount of unique, original content that engages those who visit your site.

Add Engagement For Your Visitors

Use polls, quizzes, videos, pictures, games, social networking.. whatever to add variety throughout your website.

You don't just want to throw a bunch of stuff up - take your time and put some thought behind it.

Within a few weeks if you keep up with it you should start to see visitors flow into your website. Visit other websites and comment on what you life. Commenting is another free and easy way to advertise.

 Now What?

Once you have had your website up for a while you should consider a domain name. This is paid hosting and your URL would read internetjunkie.com versus internetjunkie.blogspot.com. However, there is nothing wrong with keeping your site on a free hosting site!
